The Get In My Hood Polar Bear Appreciation Week has been a lot of fun!  I've really enjoyed sharing information about polar bears with you and seeing how far that information has been spread each day!  Thank you to all of you who have participated in this fun and informative week about polar bears!  I hope that we have accomplished our goal of getting information out there about these wonderful and endangered animals.  I also hope that this information has inspired people to think of ways in which they can help!
Today I finished entering all the names of people who participated in the contest.  I drew the name of the contest winner at random from that list...

... and the winner of the Polar Bear SpiritHood is M. Kollmesch!!!  Congratulations!

I hope to hold more contests in the future and I will continue to post at Get In My Hood about everything related to my love for SpiritHoods (and sometimes other random things that I love too!)  Stay tuned for more information about the new 2012 Spring line of SpiritHoods coming soon!

Thank you to all of you who have been celebrating the Get In My Hood Polar Bear Appreciation Week with me!  Although I made up this excuse to celebrate polar bears all week long, I hope that you have learned as much as I have and have enjoyed sharing the daily facts.

Since today is that last day of the contest, I wanted to do something a little bit different.  Earlier this week, I shared the fact about scientists concluding that the threat to polar bears is ecological change in the Artic from global warming.  Each day this week, I have been thinking about ways that I can better reduce my carbon foot print.

One way I show my love for the planet and its creatures is by eating a mostly plant-based diet, and no meat at all.  Did you know that it takes 441 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef?  Also, cows produce anywhere from 100 to 520 quarts of methane gas daily!  The meat industry is believed to be a large contributor to global warming.

Today I ask you to leave a comment on this post telling me how you reduce your carbon foot print or how you plan to do so going forward.  I will count your comment as an additional contest entry to win that polar bear SpiritHood that I know you'd love to have!

Polar Bear Fact #6:  Polar bears are classified as marine mammals because they spend most of their lives on the frozen Arctic sea ice. Males can weigh up to 1,430 pounds and grow as long as 10 feet in length.  But only 20,000-25,000 of these powerful animals remain in the wild, and their survival is in jeopardy.  (Information from WWF)

Super-cute: Two newly-born polar bears in Laohutan Ocean Park in Dalian, China, look at the cute round little tummies on them.  The two month old male twins now weigh 9.7kg and 9.1kg respectively and are just learning to crawl. Eventually they will weigh between 350 to 680kg.

Polar Bear Fact #5:  Many polar bears now suffer from malnutrition and others face starvation, especially females with cubs. Polar bear populations in Canada’s Hudson Bay have declined by 22 percent since the 1990s and researchers predict up to 73 percent of pregnant females in this population could fail to bring their cubs to term, given current and anticipated sea ice conditions. Polar Bear Fact #3:   In fall pregnant polar bears make dens in earth and snowbanks, where they'll stay through the winter and give birth to one to three cubs. In spring the mother emerges from her den followed by her cubs. Generally, she will nurse them for two and a half years. During that time she will protect them and teach them how to hunt.  (Information from National Geographic)

International Polar Bear Day was great, but the fun at Get In My Hood is just beginning with day 2 of Polar Bear Appreciation Week!

Polar Bear Fact #2:  Polar bears live in the Arctic and hunt seals and other fatty marine mammals from sea ice. They also travel, mate, and sometimes give birth on the ice. But sea ice is melting as the planet warms, and it is predicted to continue to do so for several more decades.  (Information from National Geographic)

I hope that you are having a happy International Polar Bear Day!  Polar bears are one of my favorite animals.  They are so beautiful, strong, and majestic!  It is so sad that their habitat is so threatened by global warming, and I know that as humans, there are many things that we can do to reduce our carbon foot prints and help save polar bears!

I love polar bears so much that I have decided to turn International Polar Bear Day into Polar Bear Appreciation Week here at Get In My Hood.  Each day this week (Monday 2/27 - Sunday 3/4) I will post a new picture/video and fact about polar bears and will be giving away a FREE Polar Bear SpiritHood at the end of the week.

Here is how the Polar Bear SpiritHood giveaway works:
    *  Each day after I post a new picture/video and fact about polar bears on Get In My Hood, I will be posting a short note with
a link to the information on my Twitter Account (@GetInMyHood) and to my Facebook page,

This giveaway is about spreading information and awareness about polar bears!  I hope that you enjoy the information that  is shared.  The more you help in spreading this information, the higher chance you will have of winning your own Polar Bear SpiritHood!

So let's get to the important part!

Polar Bear Fact #1:  Scientists have concluded that the threat to polar bears is ecological change in the Arctic from global warming. Polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting, breeding, and in some cases, denning. Summer ice loss in the Arctic now equals an area the size of Alaska, Texas, and the state of Washington combined.
